Brightstar Corp, which claims to be the largest wireless distribution and supply chain company worldwide, has launched its fixed wireless division in India to supply handsets for wireless local loop services. The services provide connectivity where there is little or no access to landline communications. The terminal devices use cellular technology but look and operate like a standard desk phone. Brightstar launched its subsidiary, Brightstar India, in early 2005. It operates two sales and distribution offices in Mumbai and Delhi, and 23 billing points throughout the country to provide localized distribution and billing support. At the end of 2005, India had a little over 75.5 million wireless users. By 2010, that number is predicted to rise to over 350 million. According to Brightstar, the market for fixed wireless is also huge: more than four million fixed wireless devices are expected to be sold in 2006 in India. Brightstar will offer products under its own Avvio brand and says it intends to work with manufacturer partners in China and Korea to develop new fixed wireless handsets to meet the specific needs of the India market. Brightstar has initially commercialised five models for India, GSM and CDMA. In March, Brightstar joined Axiom Telecom, Dangaard Telecom & RadioShack to form BRAXDA Telecom, "a distribution, supply chain and retail alliance to serve the wireless telecommunications industry worldwide." Telstra, controversially appointed Brightstar as its exclusive source for all wireless phones, devices and accessories last October. |
