According to an Associated Press report, Gates, who is in South Africa, said he would delay Vista if beta testing showed the product was not ready. Vista, which has been five years in the making, has been delayed so many times that the long suffering public, not to mention developers and suppliers are becoming numbed by the constant push back of the release date. A hint that Vista was likely to be delyed yet again was dropped at the beginning of this month when Microsoft let it be known that the release of Office 2007 would be delayed until sometime in "early 2007". It has been Microsoft's stated intention to release the two products together. Microsoft relies heavily on its two flagship products Windows and Office for the lion's share of its earnings and revenues. The continual delays in new releases has seen growth in revenues from the two software products flatten considerably. Aside from its difficulties in bringing the upgrades to market, Microsoft is being threatened in both areas by the emergence of competing open source software and web services solutions. On top of this, the shift of Apple to the Intel platform has raised the spectre of possible leakage of home PC consumers from Windows to Mac OSX. {moscomment} |
