Search leader Google has upgraded and added new features to its successful Google Earth product, including an improved user interface, expanded platform support for Linux and plans to integrate the product with Google Maps.

Google Earth, a free online application which has captured the imagination of tens of millions of people, enables users to use satellite cameras to zoom into and view locations in cities down to building level. Users have reported being able to locate an aerial view of their own houses using the application.

This week, Google announced that the application has been enhanced considerably, with the huge database of images increased fourfold, enabling mapping and local search applications to be implemented.

The user interface has had a make-over and now includes facilities for users to create their own plug-ins and content. This is bound to be a popular feature amongst the Linux community, which has a culture of providing open source plug-ins to enhance existing applications. {moscomment}
