MessageLabs launches filtering for instant messages E-mail

MessageLabs has launched a filtering service for instant messaging claimed to be the first in the world to filter instant message content, attachments and URLs in real-time. MessageLabs claims to be the first company in the world to offer this protection as a managed service by scanning for malware 'in the cloud' before it can get into corporate networks via IM.

The service is claimed to interoperate with other popular IM platforms while providing a fully secure, private and encrypted channel that blocks the increasing number of IM-related threats.

Other features include: recording of conversations for compliance; control on who is invited to the IM network and operation over port 443, the standard "https" port for secure web traffic enabling business to keep all other ports closed.

The service has been developed from that offered by Omnipod, a company acquired by MessageLabs in October 2005. The Omnipod technology has been incorporated into MessageLabs' existing portfolio of messaging and web security services. Like MessageLabs' existing email and web filtering services, it is provided by routing all the customers' messages through one of MessageLabs' global network of servers:

The service is available in three bundles:
EIM Communicate - provides monitoring of chat and exchanged files with other users within the same organisation and includes the MessageLabs POD (Professional Online Desktop) client and EIM File Sharing function.

EIM Connect - Allows users to connect with users outside of the EIM network, through a variety of platforms and includes EIM Interoperate, EIM Logging and EIM SMS.

EIM Collaborate - Gives users the ability to work with a full suite of communication products in a single interface and provides integration with additional applications such as WebEx and SalesForce.

According to MessageLabs, analysts estimate that more than 100 million people use IM in the enterprise sector, a figure which is expected to increase at an annual rate of between 23 to 40 per cent over the next four years. {moscomment}
