AMD Live! provides a distinct air of deja vu E-mail

I know its been trademarked and all that but why is that I get the feeling of familiarity - a sense of deja vu - when I hear the phrase "AMD Live!"?  Could it be that much of the software that will run AMD's new home entertainment platform bears a similar name?

Seriously though, knowing how the trademark process works, the sheer synchronicity between the AMD Live! and the Windows Live platform of software is almost too good to be true. Intel must be kicking itself. Viiv might play well in France, where Microsoft is less than adored, but AMD Live! and Windows Live - now that's a global partnership made in heaven. We're willing to bet that Intel tried to get the name but AMD beat them to it.

According to its media blurb, AMD Live! PC is a full-featured media centre PC, designed to enable consumers to organise, distribute, share, and enjoy their content collection throughout the home and on the go. Leading OEMs including Acer, Alienware, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Gateway and HP, Sahara, and Tsinghua Tongfang (I must admit I don't know those last two), as well as system builders in North America, Western Europe, and China, will have AMD Live! PCs, powered by AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor, starting in June. The AMD Live! Entertainment Suite, a collection of services and applications, is available now at www.amdlive.com.

AMD now has about 20% processor marketshare and in case there's any doubt as to whether Microsoft feels that it should be cavorting with Intel's only serious competitor, listen to this:

"We've seen remarkable enthusiasm for Windows XP Media Centre Edition PCs, enabling consumers to enjoy their photos, music, TV shows and movies throughout the home," said Mike Sievert, corporate vice president, Windows Client Marketing at Microsoft. "By collaborating with AMD to deliver a powerful combination of digital entertainment software on a strong media platform, Microsoft is helping to provide consumers with rich, engaging experiences."

There you have it from the horse's mouth. As far as Microsoft is concerned, AMD Live! is a strong media platform. Right now, Intel must be feeling like the older brother who gets ignored while the younger child gets all the attention. Meanwhile the younger child seems to be doing a masterful job at getting the attention of a coterie of adult admirers.

"Today customers are looking for PCs that will allow them to view, interact and play new content from broadcast television to music to games," said Tom Anderson, vice president of marketing, global consumer PCs, Personal Systems Group, HP. "By offering AMD Live! branded PCs, our customers will have the ability to buy a PC that will meet their evolving entertainment needs."

The first solutions to be offered in the AMD Live! Entertainment Suite include AMD Live! On Demand powered by Orb Networks: a service that streams live or pre-recorded television programs, photos, music and movies to web-connected devices; AMD Live! Compress: a tool that optimises recorded television content, which is claimed to enable customers to save up to 10 times as many TV shows on their PC; AMD Live! Network Magic: a service that allows users to set up, manage and secure their home network; AMD Live! LogMeIn: a service providing users the ability to remotely control their AMD Live! PC to obtain access to content, files and programs from remote locations; and AMD Live! Media Vault: a service that can automatically back-up users' digital content collection to a secure online server. Once registered and activated, AMD Live! PC users will receive 25GB of free storage to store their personal photos, home movies and music collections.

"Our vision for AMD Live! is to apply the power and flexibility of AMD64 processors in ways that help consumers to get a richer entertainment experience when and where they want, using their favourite entertainment components and devices," said Joe Menard, corporate vice president, Consumer Business Segment, AMD. "Moving forward, our mission is to put in place the additional technology and expand the ecosystem to make these new experiences even more simple and enjoyable." {moscomment}
