Arianespace has announced the successful launch of two commercial satellites, for a Mexican and a Thai operator, marking the 13th consecutive successful mission for its Ariane 5 rocket and the largest payload ever.
The 27th Ariane 5 launch, from Kourou, French Guiana .put the two satellites totalling more than 8,200 kg into geostationary orbit. According to Arianespace, Ariane 5 is the only commercial launcher in service capable of simultaneously launching two payloads. It has launched four satellites for Satmex and all five Thaicom satellites for Thailand's Shin Satellite company. Thaicom 4, launched in August 2005, otherwise known as Ipstar-1 was the largest and most powerful commercial satellite ever.

Thaicom-5 has 25 C-band transponders and 14 Ku-band transponders. It will be positioned at 78.5 degrees East and will provide telecom and television transmission services for the entire Asia-Pacific region, eventually replacing the Thaicom-3 satellite, which lost some of its Ku band transponders following a power failure in February 2003.
