| Java EE 5 to support Linux, AJAX but not open source |

Sun has flagged the release of its Java update at the upcoming JavaOne conference, which commences on May 16, claiming it is the most significant update to the program development platform in years. According to Sun, one of the big features of Java Enterprise Edition 5 (Java EE 5) will be the ease of development. Sun wants to encourage more developers to use the platform and has indicated that it wants to encourage greater adoption amongst the Linux development community by changing its license. The pundits say expect partnerships which will include the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) with Linux distributions. Another big feature, designed to make Java EE 5 relevant to the current web services development evironment of today is its ability to connect with and enable development from AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML). AJAX is the latest development tool for delivering applications like wordprocessors via the web with comparable performance to what you would expect on the desktop. However, one area where Sun is still holding out is the question of making Java an open source development environment. The open source community are not holding their breath for any such announcements next week at JavaOne.{moscomment} |
