A clear majority of readers believe that a Linux desktop will one day be a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows, according to approximately two thirds of respondents to a lightning poll.

The poll taken by iTWire of readers over an approximately six hour period attracted 100 responses. In response to the question “Will Linux will ever be a serious challenger to Windows on the desktop?” 66 answered yes and 34 answered no, providing an almost two to one response in favour of Linux.

It is clear from the result that IT industry watchers believe that Linux will one day provide a real alternative on the desktop. However, the question remains as to when and that is for another day.{moscomment}
