An organisation calling itself the Free Standards Group, supported by global heavyweights such as IBM, HP, Novell, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems and Real Networks, has announced a standard for desktop Linux applications called Linux Standard Base 3.1. In a move that's been a long time coming, the new Linux standard is aimed at introducing a standard environment around the Linux kernel for which developers can build applications. At present, most of the Linux distros have common elements but they all have their own quirks and idiosyncracies making it difficult to develop plug and play applications that will work across the entire range without tweaking. A Linux desktop that can compete with Microsoft Windows has promised for a long time but is yet to be delivered. Novell appears to be closest with its Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, which due to be released in July. However, most open source pundits agree that a truly interoperable Linux desktop that can compete with Windows will require a multi-vendor effort involving all the major Linux players. {moscomment} |
