Telstra BigPond has introduced BigPond Cable Extreme plans offering higher downstream bandwidth in preparation for its soon-to-be launched BigPond Movies Downloads service. BigPond cable presently offer 8Mbps downstream but, according to Group Managing Director BigPond, Justin Mile, "We have been upgrading the cable network's infrastructure, and we have been trialling software changes to evaluate the network's ability provide even higher speeds...During the trial, Cable customers experienced download speeds of up to 17Mbps." BigPond is now offering a service at this speed for an additional $10 per month. "With BigPond Movies Downloads, the Cable Extreme speeds means that the program can be viewed almost immediately," Milne said. BigPond currently has more than a quarter of a million customers on Cable Broadband. The Telstra Cable network passes 2.6 million Australian homes. |
