People Telecom to offer DSL on Nextep network E-mail

People Telecom is to offer broadband services based the DSLAM network operated by Nextep Broadband, a division of NEC Australia.

It claims the move will make "Australia’s first broadband virtual network operator (BVNO)."  Paul Marlow, People Telecom's general manager, data, told ITWire that People Telecom's  relationship with Nextep differs from that of other organisations who offer services on DSLAM networks they do not own in that People Telecom managed  its customers' ports on the Nextep DSLAMs and can configure grade of service, speed etc. In the case of business grade customers, it is also able to manage the customer premises router used with the service.

People Telecom says the long term agreement will give it access to close to 100 DSLAMs nationally with no capital expenditure, and the ability to offer "not only business grade broadband connectivity to its SME/SOHO customers but also next generation ADSL2+ services" to both its existing and future customer base.

The company will also launch higher margin  business VoIP services along with high speed ADSL broadband, at up to 24Mbps from February this year.

People Telecom CEO, Ryan O’Hare, commented that “at a time of uncertainty around deployment of new infrastructure, specifically DSLAMs to service the demand for business grade and higher bandwidth services, we took the view that it would be better to leverage our core competencies in the SME and SOHO markets over an established network infrastructure."
