Telstra and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) have launched an enhancement for the BlackBerry 7250 wireless handheld that allows it to double up as a wireless modem to connect a laptop or desktop to the internet.

The new modem service for the BlackBerry 7250 operates on Telstra’s 1xEV-DO mobile broadband network. People on the move can use the device to access email, the internet or company network - either directly from the BlackBerry handheld, or from a laptop computer with the BlackBerry connected via a USB cable, when they are in a Telstra 1xEVDO coverage area.

The new service is aimed at users who want handheld portability but at times require access to a full-size screen and keyboard so that they can undertake more complex online and email activity.

“The launch of the enhanced BlackBerry 7250 on Telstra Mobile Broadband provides a powerful wireless solution for the mobile workforce in Australia,” said Norm Lo, vice president of Asia Pacific at RIM. 

Telstra’s head of small business, Jenny Roche, said the BlackBerry 7250, in conjunction with Telstra Mobile Broadband, was appealing to mobile professionals looking to increase productivity when on the move.

“BlackBerry devices have revolutionised the way Australians access email and corporate data since Telstra introduced the solution in 2002,” Ms Roche said. “This new wireless modem feature, offering connections up to 10 times faster than dial up modems, will further fuel the popularity of BlackBerry handheld devices in Australia. This product also streamlines the decision making process for customers as it is one device that serves two purposes.”

Telstra’s existing BlackBerry 7250 customers can download the 1xEV-DO and modem software enhancement at no extra cost, while new customers can now purchase the enhanced BlackBerry 7250, with the software upgrade pre-installed, from Telstra Shops and dealers.

Telstra has introduced new pricing plans that combine both BlackBerry email service and Telstra Mobile Broadband usage, called BlackBerry Plus plans. These plans start at $49 per month. Pay as you go rates are also available.
