Panasonic Australia’s parent company, Matsushita Electric Industrial (MEI), has announced that it will phase out its 2.5G GSM mobile phone development and focus instead on accelerating its development of 3G mobile terminals on Linux.

Panasonic Australia stated that the VS Series of 2.5G GSM mobile handsets, which have proven popular in the local market, will be supported and production will continue as long as there is sufficient demand.

By concentrating management resources into next-generation mobile terminal technologies as well as unifying its platforms and core technologies in Japan and overseas, MEI’s subsidiary Panasonic Mobile Communications Co, aims to strengthen development efficiency and improve product competitiveness.

Panasonic is currently a leading 3G manufacturer in Japan, which was the first market to adopt the 3G technology. 

Panasonic Mobile will accelerate the development of a global mobile platform based on Linux which is now being used in the company’s Japanese market offering.

The experience and knowledge gained developing 3G mobiles for the Japanese market will be applied to the development of Panasonic’s Australian product as the major carriers begin to offer 3G services.
