Verizon is planning to open many of its U.S. Wireless stores as early as 7 A.M. tomorrow morning (Friday in the U.S.) for early adopters of the new Droid smartphone. The marketing effort will also feature interactive billboards in New York's Times Square.

The Droid phone, built by Motorola, is part of an effort by Verizon to challenge Apple's iPhone directly.

Last month the telco debuted an "iDon't" ad listing features the iPhone doesn't have but the Droid does, and the company has also been running "there's a map for that" ads touting Verizon's more extensive 3G coverage than AT&T's. (Earlier this week AT&T sued Verizon over the "map" ads.)

Whether Verizon's efforts will really lead to people getting up early to be first to get a Droid remains to be seen. The phone will go on sale tomorrow at a price of US$200 with a two-year contract, after a $100 rebate.

Verizon will also be pushing the Droid with two interactive digital billboards in New York's Times Square.

The billboards will display a toll-free phone number (1-888-376-4336) that viewers can call to initiate searches for businesses or activities in the area. The search results will be displayed as Google Maps results on the billboards.

The billboards will be operating from tomorrow through November 20 from 12:30 to 2:10 P.M. and from 6:30 to 8:10 P.M. EST, and then from 6 A.M. November 27 through 2 A.M. November 28 (the Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend). "Internet fans worldwide" (Verizon's words) can check out the scene at www.droiddoes.com/timessquare.
