Microsoft updates an update E-mail

Microsoft has released an update to overcome problems with one of October's Windows security updates.

October's Patch Tuesday saw the arrival of Security Bulletin MS09-054, which described a critical security update for Internet Explorer.

Versions 5.01 to 8 were affected, and the underlying issue was rated critical for all versions of IE or Windows as it allowed remote code execution.

But all was not well with the patch.

It turned out that the update could, in certain circumstances, lead to an erroneous "Type Mismatch" script error message, or (in IE 8 only) an incorrectly reported offsetTop calculation.

According to Microsoft officials, these problems only affect a limited number of users, but the company has decided to push a corrective update (976749) through Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Automatic Updates.

The update can also be downloaded here.

976749 should not be installed before MS09-054, officials warned.
