Science DiscussionsThe article “Effect of Retirement on Sleep Disturbances: The GAZEL Prospective Cohort Study” was authored by Finnish, Swedish, English, American, and French researchers. It was published in the November 1, 2009 issue of the journal Sleep [Vahtera J; Westerlund H; Hall M; Sjösten N; Kivimäki M; Salo P; Ferrie JE; Jokela M; Pentti J; Singh-Manoux A; Goldberg M; Zins M. Effect of retirement on sleep disturbances: the GAZEL prospective cohort study. SLEEP 2009;32(11):1459-1466.] The study was performed to learn more about sleep habits and patterns, especially with regards to workers and retirees, on present and past employees of the French national gas and electricity company (Electricité de France-Gaz de France). In all, 14,714 retired employees were studied--with 79% of them being men and, thus, 21% of them being women--between the years of 1990 and 2006. The participants filled out questionnaires about their health, lifestyle, along with social and occupational factors. The company also provided health and occupational information for the study. The researchers studied these participants from as far as seven years before retirement to as far as seven years after retirement. With a mean age of 55 years, the participants reported sleep disturbances at least once before retiring and at least once after one year of retiring. Page two continues. |
