Apple has released a major new version of the software for the Apple TV home entertainment device. A supporting version of iTunes - including a couple of other minor changes - also arrived.

Apple has followed up last month's stealth price cut on the Apple TV (from $A449 to $A329) with a major update to the device's software.

Apple TV 3.0 features a redesigned main menu that the company says makes it easier and quicker to navigate though content.

“The new software for Apple TV features a simpler and faster interface that gives you instant access to your favourite content,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet services.

It also delivers support for the iTunes LP and iTunes Extras (which allow for liner notes, video and other content in addition to audio tracks and cover art), and allows Genius Mixes and Internet radio to be played through a home theatre system.

iPhoto integration has also been improved with the addition of support for Events and Faces.

Apple TV 3.0 requires iTunes 9.0.2, which was also released overnight.

Also new in iTunes 9.0.2 are an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improved accessibility support.

Instructions for updating the Apple TV software can be found here.

iTunes can be updated via Software Update (Apple Software Update on Windows), or by selecting Check for Updates in the iTunes menu,
