IBM has expanded its OEM relationship with Juniper Networks to include Juniper's SRX Series services gateways - its multifunction network edge security devices.

IBM and Juniper announced in July that IBM would OEM Juniper MX and EX routers and switches. However the two have a long-standing relationship and IBM was flagged as having a key role in Juniper's new data centre networking architecture, the Stratus Project, announced in February. Other than to indicate that IBM has a key role in Stratus Juniper has said little about exactly what that will be, but the two companies are collaborating to set up a network of cloud computing laboratories around the world.

The announcement is the latest in a series from Juniper this week that have included; a rebranding; an OEM agreement with Dell covering Juniper's MX routers and EX switches, a new chipset and new routers using these; an open platform to enable the development of third party application s that wil interact wit networks of Juniper routers, switches and services gateways.

Of the expanded relationship with IBM, Mark Bauhaus, executive vice president and general manager of Juniper's Service Layer Technology Business Group, said: "The continued expansion of the IBM and Juniper OEM demonstrates our joint commitment to propelling a dynamic infrastructure network that is open, scalable, simple and secure to address the exploding scale of Internet services for personal and business productivity."

Barry Rudolph, vice president, IBM System Storage, said that IBM would offer IBM j-type ethernet networking products running Juniper's Junos software as part of it data centre networking portfolio.  The first IBM versions of the SRX will go on sale in the first half of 2010.

Stuart Corner travelled to New York for Juniper's announcements as a guest of the company.
