In what it says is its biggest announcement in its 12 year history, Juniper Networks has unveiled: new silicon claimed to offer dramatic performance increases in its switching and routing products; new edge routers incorporating the new chipsets, a network application platform to enable Juniper and third parties to build applications on its Junos operating system; partnerships with key vendors to help it realise its vision, and a new brand identity to help it promote its sharpened focus on Junos and its expansion into the enterprise market.

Kevin Johnson, Juniper's CEO, said: "Driven by our mission to connect everything and empower everyone, Juniper believes it's time for a new approach to networking: an approach based on smart systems and open software platforms; an approach that adapts to changing business dynamics; an approach that embraces partnership and unleashes innovation."

Strategically perhaps the most significant component of the multifaceted announcement was the application development platform, known as Junos Space , and its client counterpart, Junos Pulse. They are being billed as part of a new version of the company's Junos operating system.

The Junos Space network application platform, via a software development kit, will enable customers and third-party developers to more easily configure networks of Juniper routers, switches and security appliances to simplify network operations, automate support and accelerate service delivery.

Junos Space initially ships with three applications: Ethernet Activator, which, Juniper says, enables customers to quickly create and activate services, including activation of VPN services up to 10 times faster than competitive products; Route Analyzer, which provides DVR-like recording and playback capability to plan, simulate and troubleshoot MPLS networks; and Service Now, which speeds resolution of service issues by having Juniper systems 'call' Juniper support experts with troubleshooting data and details.

The new chipsets
, dubbed Junos Trio, are the first of what Juniper says will be a new family of chipsets, Junos One "purpose-built to meet the needs of networking at massive scale in multiple dimensions."

According to Pradeep Sindhu, Juniper's founder, vice chairman and CTO. "We invested more than $US80 million over the last five years to develop Junos Trio, yielding a fundamental advance in performance, flexibility and power efficiency to meet the Internet's massive three-dimensional scaling needs. This will dramatically change the economics for our customers, while helping them create new and better experiences for their customers. This is the platform for the next decade."

The new chipsets debut in new Juniper MX edge routers, claimed to offer dramatic increases in performance and energy efficiency that put them well ahead of competing products.

Juniper's origins were in the service provider market and over the last four years the company has moved increasingly into the enterprise space. It says the new brand image is designed to reflect "[an] expanded portfolio and go-to-market reach – which now includes software, silicon and systems for routing, switching and security across enterprise and service provider markets worldwide."

Juniper also flagged new go-to-market partnerships with Dell and IBM to deliver Juniper systems as part of their cloud-ready data centre product sets, and what it says is its first-ever Junos software licensing partnership with Blade Network Technologies, which will develop future blade switches based on Junos.

The partnership with Dell was announced earlier this week and similar one with IBM is expected shortly. Juniper also announced in July  an agreement with IBM . Both Dell and IBM will OEM Juniper's EX ethernet switches and MX edge routers.

Stuart Corner travelled to New York for Juniper's announcement as a guest of the company.
