Whereis maps for GPS navigation units now include photorealistic renderings of major junctions to make life easier for drivers.

An upgrade to the existing lane guidance feature, Whereis maps' Real View provides a realistic view of selected junctions to reduce the gap between what's on the screen of the GPS unit and what the driver actually sees.

The technology — an Australian first — provides drivers with a photo realistic representation of their driving environment, a far cry from the generic view commonly featured in map data," said Whereis spokesperson Adrian Tout.

The feature provides views of most of the major highway junctions and high-speed intersections around Australia, and includes virtual road signs to help the driver get in the appropriate lane.

"Real View makes approaching tricky spaghetti junctions and high speed intersections much easier for drivers, assisting the safe anticipation of the correct lane, slipway or branch they need to take," added Tout.

"With a growing number of complex freeway junctions and tunnels, drivers often need to make lane change decisions at high speed and with little advance information about the road. Real View aims to alert drivers early about the upcoming situation, helping to increase awareness about their position on the road and to make safer lane changes."

The first GPS units to include Real View are the Garmin Garmin nüvi 1390, 1390T and 765.
