Science DiscussionsThe study performed by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM), at the University of Camberra, was funded by Eli Lilly Ausralia. The NATSEM report states that about 7.2% of adults in Australia are expected to be diagnosed with diabetes by around 2050. That percentage is about double the current percentage. In addition, by 2050, another 7% will be living with the disease, but undiagnosed. NATSEM estimates that by 2050 type 2 diabetes will cause “… over 270,000 coronary bypass grafting procedures, over 250,000 heart attacks and more than 750,000 renal complications” in Australia. The report also states that the rate of type 1 diabetes in children is also rising. In other published reports, type 1 diabetes is increasing in Australia at a rate of 4% per year. Australia has one of the highest rates of type 1 diabetes in the world. If you haven't guess it yet, the cause of this increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes is revealed in the next sentence.
