Optus revamps wireless broadband prices E-mail

Optus has launched a number of new contract wireless broadband plans that offer almost twice the data quota of current plans, but for the first year only.

Prices start at $15 per month for 1GB of data. Other options are $25 for 2GB, $35 for 4GB and $55 for 7GB. Customers can also pay $199 up front and get 1GB per month for 12 months. At $16.58 per month this is actually more expensive than the $15 1GB plan, but has the advantage that, unlike all the other plans the quota remains at 1GB for the following 12 months. On the $15 plan and all others the data quota halves.

Jeremiah de la Cruz, general manager of Optus Consumer Products, suggested that: "After the initial 12 month contract term...customers will have a better understanding of how much data they really need and will be able to freely choose the best plan available at the end of 12 months."

Optus has also reduced the price of above-quota data from 15 cents per MB to 6 cents across the board. Optus says it has also reduced modem costs. The Huawei E160 USB 3.6Mbps modem now costs $99, the Huaw E1762 $149 and the Huawei E960 multiuser WLAN/ethernet modem gateway $199.
