Bidding $US500,000 for a 24 hour banner ad on Twitter certainly gets everyone's attention, but is it for the right reasons?

uSocial CEO Leon Hill has never been far from controversy with numerous articles describing his interest in buying and selling Twitter followships.

However, overnight, Hill probably pulled off his most daring promotional scheme ever, offering $US500,000 for one day of advertising, the plan being to place a banner ad on the site.  The press release is unclear as to whether the intention is to advertise on the front page or all pages.

"While half-a-million dollars may seem like a large amount to invest in one banner for one day, we believe that the investment will be more than worth it." Said uSocial.net CEO Leon Hill.

The release continues "Twitter as yet do not offer any kind of advertising on the site, so the move by uSocial may well end up leading to some of the first paid ads on the site. However, it is unsure as to whether Twitter will respond favourably as they may not agree with the content being advertised."

iTWire has a sneaking suspicion that perhaps the intention of this campaign is to get lots of publicity and to be rejected by Twitter - thus saving the money and getting lots of publicity at the same time!

However, this topic can reasonably be regarded as news and readers are entitled to judge for themselves.
