According to a recently published report in October 2009 by the Guttmacher Institute, an estimated 70,000 women die from unsafe abortions each year around the world. And, another five million women are treated for complications from unsafe abortions.

In addition, another three million women experience serious complications from such unsafe abortions but are not treated for these complications.

The news release from the Guttmacher Institute, and authored by Rebecca Wind, that publicizes this report is entitled “Abortion and Unintended Pregnancy Decline Worldwide as Contraceptive Use Increases.”

However, the subheading for this article states, “But, Progress Over Past Decade Has Been Uneven, and Unsafe Abortion Remains a Key Challenge to Women’s Health.”

Due primarily to increased contraceptive use, as stated in the article, the number of abortions, decreased from an estimated 45.5 million procedures, in 1995, to 41.6 million procedures, in 2003.

Within the news release, it states, “The report finds that while the incidence of abortion is closely related to that of unintended pregnancy, it does not correlate with abortion’s legal status. Indeed, abortion occurs at roughly equal rates in regions where it is broadly legal and in regions where it is highly restricted.”

However, “The key difference is safety—illegal, clandestine abortions cause significant harm to women, especially in developing countries.”

Page two describes a statement made by Sharon Camp, the president of Guttmacher Institute, about unsafe abortions.
