FM radio is one feature of the current iPod nano that's missing from Apple's more expensive handheld devices. But there's a suggestion that it will soon arrive for the iPhone and iPod touch.Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Yet the wireless chip selected by Apple for the iPhone 3GS and the current iPod touch does have the capability of receiving normal FM broadcasts. For some reason, Apple has not chosen to make use of that feature. That may be changing. According to 9to5Mac, Apple is working on a app that will allow enable that capability. If 9to5Mac's tipster is correct, the app will mirror the functionality found in the iPod nano, and - like the iPhone OS iPod application - will be able to run in the background. The report also claims that Apple is working to combine song tagging with a link to the iTunes Store so users can instantly purchase the song they're listening to. What 9to5Mac didn't mention is that if the proposed changes to US accounting regulations concerning subscription accounting go through before the radio app goes on sale, Apple will presumably make it available free of charge to both iPhone and iPod touch owners. Apple has previously used subscription accounting as a reason (or excuse, take your pick) for charging iPod touch owners for software that delivers new capabilities while iPhone owners get it for free. |
