City of Greater Bendigo Director of Organisation Support, Marg Allan, said the City has demonstrated a strong commitment to equal access and inclusion by speech-enabling its website, www.bendigo.vic.gov.au, with BrowseAloud. “BrowseAloud is designed to enhance website accessibility for those people who find it difficult to read text on screen. This can include people with learning difficulties, dyslexia, low literacy levels, mild visual impairments and those who speak English as a second language. “BrowseAloud reads website content aloud in a high quality, natural-sounding voice and highlights each word as it is spoken. “This, in combination with a number of enhanced features, such as a talking dictionary, text magnification display and text-to-MP3 output, can facilitate greater comprehension and word recognition,” said Ms Allan. City of Greater Bendigo Community Development Officer Maureen McMahon said the City is working hard to increase access and inclusion in a number of areas of its operations. “By providing BrowseAloud more of our residents will now have access to the information on our website. It’s a natural extension of the work that we have already done to make our website accessible,” said Ms McMahon. The software has also been installed on the North Central Goldfields Library, The Capital – Bendigo’s Performing Arts Centre and Bendigo Art Gallery websites. Initially introduced into the UK and Irish markets, BrowseAloud is now used by almost 3,000 organisations worldwide. In Australia, a number of Australian Councils have already adopted BrowseAloud including Hobsons Bay City Council, Townsville City Council. The Hills Shire Council and Kentish Council.
