Office Web Apps provide facilities for the viewing and basic editing of Office documents stored in Windows Live SkyDrive (Microsoft's online file storage service). Microsoft's Kurt Schmucker said "I've been using the Office Web Apps from both a Mac and a Windows PC for about a month now. I have shared documents with colleagues, and I have 'shared them with myself', since by storing my documents on Windows Live SkyDrive, I can work on them from almost anywhere on any Mac or PC with an Internet connection." The technical preview of Office Web Apps has so far only been made available to a limited number of invited users. A public beta is expected before the end of the year, with general availability in 2010. One current limitation of Office Web Apps is that there is no direct integration with Office for Mac, but the development team is working to provide this capability, which is already present for Windows users. Unlike Google Docs, Office Web Apps is intended to supplement rather than replace Office running on a desktop or notebook computer. |
