Adobe is preparing to release critical security updates for Acrobat and Reader this week. At least one of the vulnerabilities is being targeted by attackers.

The second quarterly security update for Adobe Reader and Acrobat is scheduled to arrive this Tuesday, October 13 (US time), alongside Microsoft's Patch Tuesday releases.

The update will address multiple issues, including a critical vulnerability in both programs that affects all three supported operating systems - Windows, Mac OS X and Unix.

Limited targeted attacks using this vulnerability are reportedly occurring.

Adobe has noted that Windows Vista's DEP provides protection against the vulnerability in Reader and Acrobat 9.13, and that disabling JavaScript is a mitigation against this particular attack. However, the company warns that an attack that does not use JavaScript may be possible.

Updates will be provided for Adobe Reader 9.1.3 and Acrobat 9.1.3, Adobe Reader 8.1.6 and Acrobat 8.1.6 for Windows, Macintosh and Unix, and Adobe Reader 7.1.3 and Acrobat 7.1.3 for Windows and Macintosh.

The company will post details of the update here once it is released.
