A British-French-Australian study has concluded that common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety give larger risks of becoming obese. And, the more mental problems a person has the more risk of obesity.

The October 6, 2009 British Medical Journal article “Common mental disorder and obesity: insight from four repeat measures over 19 years: prospective Whitehall II cohort study” (doi:10.1136/bmj.b3765; BMJ 2009;339:b3765) looked at possible relationships between common mental disorders and obesity.

Does mental disorders cause weight problems? Does obesity cause mental problems?

Its authors are Mika Kivimäki, Debbie A. Lawlor, Archana Singh-Manoux, G. David Batty, Jane E. Ferrie, Martin J. Shipley, Hermann Nabi, Séverine Sabia, Michael G. Marmot, and Markus Jokela.

The researchers analyzed four measures of common mental disorders and obesity from the Whitehall II cohert study.

Data was taken from a nineteen-year span of time (1985 to 2004) of 4,363 adults from civil servants in London, England.

The mean age of the participants were 44 years (35 to 55 years) at the beginning of the study, and about one fourth were female and three-fourth were male.

The subjects were assessed as to mental health condition, and height and weight (body mass index), in four different screenings (at the beginning of the study and at three different times during the 19-year period.)

Page two describes the conclusion of the study.
