Red Hat announced today that the camp, which is called Professional Open Source Software Experience or POSSE, would be held in Singapore from November 9 to 13. More than 40 open source teachers and lecturers from Australia, New Zealand, China, India and South Korea, are expected to attend the camp, among others. The camp is part of the company's Asia Pacific Open Source Collaborative Innovation (OSCI) initiative "to build vibrant open source communities for collaborative innovation." The camp will introduce teachers to get a taste of what it is like to be in the global open source community and see what things are like in FOSS development projects. Within a year, Red Hat hopes to hold such boot camps in each country in the region in order to offer training at close to 60 educational institutions. Participants will be taught to write and contribute code, debug and test, and package software. "With the sharp growth in demand for open source, we are actively expanding our Red Hat Academy program - a hands-on curriculum that takes open source into secondary and tertiary classrooms around Australia and New Zealand," Max McLaren, senior director and general manager, Australia and New Zealand, said. "POSSE is integral to our aim of generating more open source skills for the market, and by providing an environment for teachers to experience the power of collaboration, community and shared knowledge all fundamental to open source we are better equipping them to encourage students to participate in real community-based, open source development projects." |
