Three of Victoria's universities have announced their plan for a shared, energy-efficient data centre. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Fujitsu Australia.Featured Whitepaper

Developed in collaboration with Fujitsu Australia, the new centre is designed to be more energy efficient than existing facilities. According to a Fujitsu spokesperson, the collaboration is a first in the Australian higher education sector, and it will allow each institution to expand its data centre capacity at lower cost, with greater flexibility, and with high standards of sustainability. (The idea of universities sharing computer facilities is nothing new. For example, the Flowers Report to the UK government in the mid-sixties recommended the establishment of regional computer centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh to serve surrounding universities and research establishments, supplementing their local facilities.) Work on setting up the Melbourne centre began late last month, and the universities will move in by January 2010, in time for the new academic year. The universities' ten-year plan predicts an additional 100 square metres of space will be needed every year, with the first expansion planned for 2011. What did the participants have to say about the project? Find out on page 2. |
