One of the recurring complaints about the iPhone is that it can't run Flash applications. Adobe has at last come up with a partial answer.

A longstanding issue with the iPhone is that it can't handle Flash content. Apart from any technical issues, Apple's conditions for software sold through the App Store prohibit the use of virtual machines or just-in-time compilers, both of which are essential to the way the Flash runtime works.

Now Adobe has come up with a mechanism for allowing applications developed using Flash to run on the iPhone and iPod touch.

The forthcoming Flash Professional CS5 will include the ability to generate standalone applications for iPhone OS 3.0 and later.

This technology was demonstrated at the Adobe MAX developer conference in Los Angeles this week.

"The engineering teams at Adobe have succeeded in bringing the latest Flash technology to the iPhone, opening the way for the Flash community to deploy to the App Store," said Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch.

"When Apple is ready to bring the full Web browsing experience to iPhone users, we'll be ready to bring Flash Player to Safari," he added.

A number of outside developers have already used the Flash Professional CS5 beta to create iPhone apps that are available from the App Store. These include Bowler Hat Games' Chroma Circuit, MTV Networks' South Park Avatar Creator, and DifferenceGames' Red Hood.
