Palm Pre syncs with iTunes (again) E-mail
by Jake Widman

A new version of Palm's webOS slipped out quietly over the weekend, improving syncing with archived e-mail. Oh, and it restores the iTunes syncing ability, too.

As described in the official Palm blog, webOS 1.2.1 is mainly aimed at fixing problems syncing the Pre with Exchange Archive Solution e-mail in Microsoft Exchange 2007.

According to the blog, the problems started with the update to version 1.2, released September 28.

Version 1.2.1 also fixes issues with streaming music or video and includes multiple security fixes.

And, the post mentions almost in passing, it "also re-enables the ability of Palm media sync to work with the current version of iTunes."

Yes, the back-and-forth with Apple over whether the Pre will be able to sync with iTunes (it could on release, then it was blocked , then it could again , then the September release of iTunes 9 blocked it once more) has gone back to Apple.

Most of the speculation about Apple's intentions that was making the rounds last June still seems valid.

It's pretty clear that Apple would prefer that the Pre not be able to sync natively with iTunes. So far, however, the company seems to be content to fight the battle technologically rather than legally.
