Cisco will later this month reveal details of its borderless networks architecture, the third major plank on which it hopes to secure the future growth of its business, and headed by the former CEO of Cisco Australia & New Zealand, Ross Fowler.

Late last year Cisco unveiled collaboration as the first of these major initiatives , identifying this as a $U7b extension of the $US27b unified communications market. Early this year it flagged virtualisation as the second of these, unveiling the bold step of entering the server market in competition with well-established players,  to better enable it to play in the data centre virtualisation market.

The newest initiative, borderless networks, is on a par with these two earlier major shifts in focus for Cisco. The VP of Cisco Australia, Les Williamson, told journalists at Cisco Networkers in Brisbane last week: "Globally, whilst we have a lot of initiatives we are focussed on we have launched this 'business relevance' conversation. We are going to base that around three key architectures:  collaboration [headed in Australia by Peter Hughes], virtualisation [headed in Australia by Dylan Morrison] and something we are calling borderless networks which is about making the routing and switching a safe, scalable and secure infrastructure inside and outside the enterprise to enable these application rich consumer and business services."

According to Cisco, borderless networks "spans switching, routing, mobility, security and application acceleration technologies" and will "promote service agility and business responsiveness, anywhere, anytime, and to anyone." Cisco also says that, in addition to revealing details of its borderless network plans, it will announce "an exciting new innovation...that delivers on the borderless experience."

To launch borderless networks Cisco will host an online interactive event on 21 October (Asia Pacific time, 20 Oct US time) at which "Top Cisco executives [will] unveil industry-changing innovations for delivering the ultimate workspace experience [and]  industry-leading IT managers [will] describe how they're transforming their businesses with these innovations."

Speakers will include Ross Fowler worldwide vice president borderless network architecture - an Australian and 29 year Alcatel veteran who left Alcatel in 2003 to head Cisco ANZ for four years before being promoted to head Cisco's service provider business out of London in mid 2007 - and Marie Hattar, vice president of borderless networks marketing at Cisco.

Fowler has responsibility for the worldwide sales of Cisco's borderless network architecture and co-chairs Cisco's multifunction borderless network architecture board "to drive the overall vision, strategy and execution for that architecture."
