Last April, Apple announced that a billion apps had been downloaded in the nine months of the Store's existence. Today, the company announced that the total is now two billion. "The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in the announcement. According to the announcement, the Store hosts more than 85,000 applications and serves more than 50 million iPhone and iPod Touch owners in 77 countries. Other companies have attempted to mimic the success of the App Store: BlackBerry owners can shop at BlackBerry App World, and Palm has a site for applications for its webOS-based phones (the Pre and the Pixi). |
