We return to Wolfenstien, and still those darn Nazi’s are fiddling with the occult, will they never learn?  Raven software has produced, yes, another WWII shooter, but with enough leather clad scientists and glowing blue lights to realise this is not history as we know it.

Sitting down to “another WWII shooter” can take some effort these days, but whilst the setting remains largely entrenched in the 1940’s Europe, with B.J. Blazkowicz returning straight into the anti-Nazi action, being a Wolfenstein branded game means players will need to be wary of much more than unexpected stick grenades.

B.J must head back into enemy territory to stop and save those nasty German’s from themselves, for “They tamper with knowledge they do not understand”.  Being a highly decorated member of the Office of Secret Actions B.J. does understand the dark forces that the German forces are attempting to harness.

Armed with a Thule Medallion giving B.J Veil Powers unleashing the force of the Black Sun (more on all of this soon) the calm and collected Allied soldier will – along with a little help from the resistance – take on the might of the Third Reich and once again turn the tide of the entire war in heroic fashion.

Well that’s the theory anyway, but things get complicated along the way.  Wolfenstein can draw its lineage back to the very beginnings of First Person Shooters, and in many ways this is traditional shooter with a modern day graphical skin.  And then in many other ways Wolfenstein differs from the norm.

Let’s just discuss the differences.  Firstly, much of Wolfenstein is non-linear, the action largely uses the [fictional] city of Isenstadt as the hub of action, with BJ finding Resistance (and other organisations) Safe Houses as the place to pick up missions, both of the core and side variety.

From the various locals within Isenstadt B.J. will travel to other locals to fulfil the various story driving missions with each side-locale providing a relatively linear approach before returning somewhere to the Isenstadt hub to complete the mission.  At the end of each mission B.J. himself does the voice over of the mission brief, injecting some personality (cold military style as it may be) into the player’s character.

The only problem with the hub style is that these areas become spawning points for Nazi troops during your travels.  After a small amount of time, and especially as B.J’s powers increase, these enemies, varied as they be within the canon of Nazi troops, become a tiresome speed bump to completing and gaining new missions.  It is an artificial way to extend the life of the single player adventure.

Blazkowicz has a host of conventional and extremely unconventional weaponry at his disposal, all of which can be modified by spending collected loot/gold at the various black market hidey-holes around the greater Isenstadt.  You will never have enough money to purchase all of the upgrades on offer so ‘choose wisely’, for whilst that Heavy Bore upgrade might be tempting, is it better to have a larger magazine in the long run?

Whilst blasting enemies with an MP3 is fun, disintegrating a trooper with the Particle Cannon as an experience should not be underrated.

I need to mention the very first angry shot I made in the game, it hit the unfortunate Nazi in the neck resulting in him clutching his wound as it bled profusely, the gurgling of his agony as the virtual soldier died was unnerving, setting the atmosphere for most of the game.
