The Service Providers Association (SPAN) has released a report "Challenges and opportunities for carriers and service providers in an IP centrex environment" IP centrex provides PABX-like functionality as an outsourced IP-accessible application thereby freeing the customer from management of self-owned equipment and IT infrastructure According to NSC founder, Craig Neil, "The event was staged to stimulate widespread industry discussion. IP centrex and other similar IP-based applications are clearly the way of the future. The success that carriers and service providers enjoy with IP centrex will have a major impact on future business use of communications networks." Panellists agreed that there were considerable opportunities surrounding IP centrex, but that both service providers and technology suppliers face challenges in achieving widespread uptake.
