The manufacturers of some of the most popular printers and multifunction devices have caught up with last month's release of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

One of the biggest complaints about the arrival of Snow Leopard was the absence of drivers for many popular printers and multifunction devices.

Late last week saw the arrival of additional Snow Leopard compatible drivers for various models from Brother, Canon and Hewlett-Packard that weren't supported in the original Mac OS X 10.6 release.

The drivers for some devices have been updated from the versions provided with Mac OS X 10.6. For example, network printing is now supported on certain Canon models that initially only worked via USB.

In such cases, the new drivers will be offered the next time the Software Update utility runs.

Apple's packaging of the additional drivers requires Mac OS X 10.6.1 - which was also released last week - although the latest installers provided by the printer manufacturers for at least some of the models concerned work with 10.6.

HP is still working on Snow Leopard support for certain additional inkjet devices including the Deskjet F2100, F2200 and F2400 series.

Various printers were supported in the original release of Snow Leopard, including models from Epson, Fuji Xerox, Lexmark and Samsung, as well as some from vendors previously mentioned.

The driver packages are available from Apple's Support Downloads page, and a support note lists the currently compatible models.
