Just two weeks after Snow Leopard hit the shelves, Apple has released Mac OS X 10.6.1 Update. The company has also issued a security update for its older operating systems.Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Most significantly, it addresses issues that could cause some printer drivers to not appear properly in the Add Printer browser, and prevent the sending of mail via certain SMTP servers. It also includes Flash Player 10.0.32.18, which was released by Adobe a few days before Snow Leopard shipped. The problem with the original Snow Leopard installer was that if 10.0.32.18 was already present, it would be downgraded to an older and less secure version. The Flash Player update is the only security related change in 10.6.1. Other changes in 10.6.1 provide improved compatibility with Sierra Wireless 3G modems, more reliable DVD playback, and more reliable operation of the keyboard shortcut for displaying the Characters palette. Also fixed are issues that could make it difficult to remove an item from the Dock, cause Motion 4 to freeze, and prevent Mail's auto account setup from working. Alongside 10.6.1, Apple also released Security Update 2009-005 for Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard and Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger, including the Server versions. The issues addressed by this update had already been fixed in 10.6, with the exception of the Flash Player update which is also part of 10.6.1. As usual, several of the fixes involve the delivery of new versions of open source projects, namely ClamAV, CUPS, MySQL, PHP, Samba. The updates address arbitrary code execution and privilege escalation issues. What else is fixed in Security Update 2009-005? Find out on page 2. |
