Dell has small and medium businesses in its sights with new servers and related hardware. Some of the products will also be relevant to larger customers.

Dell has released a raft of servers, storage units and uninterruptible power supplies.

Dell's latest PowerEdge servers are "really designed for the SMB space," enterprise marketing manager Justin Boyd told iTWire. Windows Server 2008 R2 is preinstalled on all of the new models.

The T110 (from $A879) is a tower server just 18in (46cm) deep to suit the space limitations of small offices, Boyd said. This is a similar depth to a normal desktop PC mini-tower case.

It will be the first product to go on the market with Intel's new Xeon 3400 series CPU (the other new Dell servers also use this chip), and other features include eSATA ports for ease of attaching external storage.

Boyd told iTWire that the T110 incorporates power and cooling efficiencies developed from Dell's blade server designs, and is around 80% more efficient than previous similar products.

The R210 (from $A1449) is Dell's smallest rack server, with a depth of 15.5in (39cm). This model is around 90% more efficient than its predecessor, Boyd said, and it has the smallest energy footprint among the PowerEdge family.

The T310 (from $A1999) is aimed at customers that require more advanced management capability, according to Boyd. It also features hot-pluggable drive bays.

Rounding out the new range is the R510 (from $A2899), a 2U rack server that can accommodate up to eight internal drives. A 12-drive model will follow, Boyd said.

He believes that these new models will often be the 'real server' acquired by customers that have previously used ordinary PCs as servers. "This is about centralising storage," he said.
