This morning, for a total of 65 minutes, Telstra internet customers were entirely unable to access any web site outside of Australia.  What happened?

This morning, according to Telstra's records at 7:43am, every customer on any of their web systems (dial-up, cable, ADSL or mobile) was suddenly unable to access any website outside of Australia.

Personal and anecdotal evidence suggests that no other providers were affected.

According to a Telstra spokesperson, "All services have been restored. We are continuing to work to understand what happened and why. What we understand from preliminary inquiries is that from 7.43am, customers attempting to access web sites hosted overseas, or Australian sites with content hosted overseas received a "Network error – DNS server failure". It appears a planned change on the international gateways implemented earlier in the morning was the trigger. The change was rolled back, restoring services at 8.48am.

"A full investigation is being undertaken. We have commenced a detailed and thorough technical investigation into the incident. This may take some time to conduct to ensure we fully understand the issue and can put appropriate measures in place to maintain the integrity and operation of our network."

Early reports here and here for instance, suggested some kind of breakdown.  But this clearly proved not to be the case.

iTWire recently toured Telstra's Global Operations Centre as part of their tenth birthday celebrations.  Part of that tour included a view of the discrete Special Incident team.  It is not known if this particular group was managing the incident, but during the tour, the team was identified as having responsibility for similar 'events.'

So, what can be gleaned?
