Ageism rife in IT? E-mail

More than 20% of IT professionals say they have experienced age discrimination, and unemployment among senior IT professionals is running at over 30%.

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) is setting up an age discrimination taskforce in the light of the results of the society's latest employment survey.

"Ageism is a growing reality in Australia, but so is an increasing awareness that post-45 year old workers represent a skill resource and knowledge that we cannot afford to waste," said ACS chairman Kumar Parakala.

"Older workers bring a greater depth of experience and pragmatism to projects since they have learned over time what does and doesn’t work. They often have tactics and skills that can ensure the success of a project, and the application of that experience results in a higher degree of professionalism. This is something that Australia has to deal with, if we are going to compete internationally, as we have to make the best use of all of our skilled workers, especially with an ageing workforce," added Parakala.

Survey respondents also reported increased levels of racial or ethnic discrimination. Over 12% of respondents reported such discrimination, compared with 9.6% in the 2007 survey. The ACS suggests this may be related to the economic downturn.

It is a fairly widely held belief that such discrimination becomes more widespread during tough times as feelings that "foreigners are taking our jobs" come to the surface.

If you think it's bad that 12% of IT professionals have experienced racial or ethnic discrimination and 20% say they've faced age discrimination, 34% of female respondents said they had been discriminated against on the basis of gender.

The survey also looked at unemployment, training, and patterns of work, so please read on.
