Sony today released the long-awaited firmware 3.0 for the PlayStation 3 gaming console, which includes dynamic themes and a whole raft of new features.

The brand new firmware 3.0 was demonstrated and detailed during the GamesCon 2009 which was held in Cologne, Germany, and is now available for free download for all PS3 users.

One of the biggest additions that users will notice straight away is support for dynamic themes and avatars, which means your backgrounds are about to get animated, along with your avatars. Other new features include a redesigned status indicator, Friends list, "What's New" section, PSN Shortcuts, themes-avatars and better trophies management are included in this update. Apart from these features, other changes were observed in the PlayStation 3 System interface.

In order to download the new PS3 update, simply go to the 'System Update' in the PlayStation 3's XMB (Xross Media Bar). Along with support for new avatars and XMB themes, this firmware also features the new PS3 logo as seen on the PS3 Slim, and is being heralded as a major improvement for the system, as it fixes certain issues that were widely complained about, such as the lack of copy/paste and the rather mundane "Information Board".

Here's a rundown of the new features, thanks to TechTree and PlaystationLifestyle.

* “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.

* Status Indicator – In the top right corner the've added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.

* Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.

* PlayStation Store Shortcuts – They’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.

* Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.

* Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

Along with these main features, some of the more hidden features include:

    * New slim PS3 logo on startup
    * Copy-Paste function for web browser and messages
    * Audio can be outsourced to multiple connectors from Settings> Sound Settings > Audio Multi Output
    * Speed of Internet connection can be tested from Network Settings> Internet Connection Test
    * Web Browser Screenshot can be saved by pressing Triangle button in Internet Browser and go to File> Save a screenshot
    * Device such as a PSP can be manually set for Remote Play
    * Right direction analog control can be used for slow playback, fast forward or fast reverse during video playback

The new update seems more evolution than revolution, but does include some nice touches that will only add to the experience. PS3 owners have no reason not to start their downloads immediately. Also, the new PS3 Slim, when it arrives, will come pre-equipped with the new firmware.
