Microsoft SharePoint has become the ubiquitous intranet solution for many a corporation, ousting former mainstays like Lotus Domino. Yet, leveraging its capabilities to full potential remains outside the hands of many an administrator or user. Here’s where SharePoint Designer comes in, and consequently this handy Microsoft Press tutorial and guide.

Yet, on the other hand, SharePoint can often become merely a repository for Excel spreadsheets when often customised databases would better serve business objectives. Or, manual processes could be enhanced by using forms and workflows – if only the administrators and key users knew how to extend SharePoint’s “out-of-the-box” functionality to build their own applications within its framework. Microsoft has provided SharePoint Designer, but while Web designers might find aspects of its interface familiar it still requires an understanding of SharePoint’s components and backend processes to really drive. Fortunately, Microsoft Press has produced a very accessible guide albeit with a lengthy title, “Building web applications with SharePoint Designer 2007” which is part of their “step by step” series. The title is not aimed to be a comprehensive reference for all SharePoint knowledge but it serves admirably as an introductory tutorial that builds confidence, develops understanding and leads readers from knowing little to building working applications. The book’s chapters work through managing SharePoint sites within SharePoint Designer, accessing styles, creating layouts and through creative data sources, using ASP.NET and SharePoint controls, parameters, list forms and pages and on to the Windows Workflow Foundation. The author has an easy to read writing style. Each chapter commences with a checklist explaining what will be covered and concludes with a summary of the key points to further cement the learning objectives. Annotated screen shots, step-by-step instructions, a detailed index and sample files on an accompanying CD all work together to make the text more than merely a book, but rather an enjoyable journey of discovery and achievement. I think this is a tremendous book for any beginning SharePoint developer and at $US 29.99 or $AUD 65 it is also excellent value. The ISBN number is 9-780735-626324 and the book is available for purchase online through Microsoft Press. |
