Developer Naughty Dog is amping up the hype for the release of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves on the PlayStation 3.  What for many was THE game of this year’s E3 event, and the sequel to the must have Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2 is definitely shaping up nicely.  To this extent, Naughty Dog exec Christophe Balestra believes it would have been impossible to code the game for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform.

"We've invested a lot of time maximizing the power of the machine, that's our job, to make the PS3 shine."  Says Christophe Balestra, co-president of developer Naughty Dog in an interview with Ars Technica recently.

“I guarantee that this game couldn't be working on XBox 360. It would be impossible. I'm 100 percent sure of this." He says, referring to the use of the PlayStation SPU’s (Synergistic Processing Units) and capacity of the Blu-Ray format.

According to Balestra, the first Uncharted title used around 30 percent of the SPU’s power, this has been amped up to full capacity of the PlayStation 3 brain due to the better understanding of the platform’s hardware granted by time.

"The ability to use the RSX [the PS3's graphics processor] to draw your pixels on the screen, then you use the Cell to do gameplay and animations—we kind of took the step of using the Cell process to help the RSX . All those things are done on the Cell processor," he explained. "It really helps us getting that quality of lighting per pixel; the amount of computation is pretty crazy."

Taking this further, Christophe extols the fact that every PS3 comes with a hard drive and Blu-Ray disc player as standard: "It's the combination of Blu-ray and hard drive. You can play the entire game without loading. We don't require an install. We're doing all the post-processing effects on the SPUs.  The quality of the depth of field we have, you can't do that on the Xbox."

So is Balestra saying that Uncharted 2 has maxed out the PlayStation 3.  With comments such as using 100 percent of the SPU power, along with statements such as: “...we fill the Blu-ray 100 percent, we have no room left on this one. We have 25GB of data; we're using every single bit of it.", and “...We've invested a lot of time maximizing the power of the machine .“, it does look like it.

It is funny isn’t it?  Not so long ago, when Volition Producer Rick White said Red Faction:  Guerrilla would be ‘maxing out’ the Xbox 360 , this was seen as a negative for the machine, but here is Naughty Dog opening boasting about how the PS3 will be pushed by Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.  I guess it is all in the spin.

Whilst there have been plenty of multi-disc titles for the Xbox 360 with the equivalent amount of usable game data, with only the minor inconvenience of occasional disc-swapping, Naught Dog are set to really impress with the Uncharted sequel.

Balestra is touting Uncharted 2 as the “new showcase title ” for PlayStation 3 owners when it arrives in October
