STS-128 delayed again: Valve problem E-mail

The Wednesday, August 26, 2009 launch of the space shuttle Discovery was scrubbed again, but this time because of a suspect valve in the main propulsion system. The scheduled launch date is now set for Friday, August 28, 2009, if repairs can be made in the meantime.

NASA announced Tuesday evening that the next launch attempt for the STS-128 mission to the International Space Station would be at 12:22 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on Friday, August 28, 2009.

Although the weather was still a concern on Tuesday, it became apparent that a bigger problem was within a valve in the space shuttle’s main propulsion system.

The valve was not working properly while the shuttle’s external tank was being filled late on Tuesday.

The Discovery launch team was not sure whether the valve closed when it was commanded to be closed.

This particular valve is located in the aft compartment of the main propulsion s system.

Although a new launch time has been scheduled for Friday, August 28, the STS-128 mission team will meet on Thursday, August 27, to decide if the valve problem has been solved and that they are ready for liftoff.
