The trick is that the software automatically determines whether to keep data on the original high-performance drives or whether it can be placed on the larger and slower - but cheaper - drives. "Developed in the Teradata Labs, the virtualisation of data storage allows customers to add larger disk drives to existing Teradata system configurations without the additional cost of adding processing units or nodes and database software," said Scott Gnau, Teradata's head of development. "This unique Teradata capability reduces the cost of adding additional storage by as much as 10 times, making it cost effective to meet the ever-increasing demands to store and analyse more data," he added. The company claims Teradata 13 Database has the unique ability to automatically and intelligently manage data placement so that the most frequently used ('hottest') data is stored on the fastest storage and the least frequently used ('coolest') on the slowest. According to company officials, a side effect of this development will be to reduce the amount of e-waste as it extends the useful life of old storage arrays when new units are installed. Data lifecycle management is nothing new, but Teradata claims its product is able to pick the appropriate location for the data without user or administrator intervention. |
