Mobile content retailer, Mobile Streams, today opened a Center of Excellence for smartphone research and development in Hong Kong which it says will work on the development of new applications for the Apple iPhone and Google’s Android.

Mobile Streams’ VP Asia Pacific, Angela Mastrillo said today the new global facility would play a key role in the company's continuing development of smartphone and feature phone applications and services for Mobile Streams and its customers.

Mastrillo said the company was excited about the “great consumer experiences that smartphones and related on device portals provide,” and, he added, “the prospects for global distribution and creating a hub for the community aspects for brands are particularly exciting for my team.”

The new centre will be headed up by Mobile Streams’ VP for Technology, Jacky Lee, and Mastrillo said that, in addition, the company had recruited a smartphone specialist with the appointment of Ting Fung LAM as a smartphone programmer.  LAM joins Mobile Streams from Artificial Life where he worked as a games programmer.

Mobile Streams CEO and founder, Simon Buckingham, said the newly opened Center of Excellence underlined the company’s commitment to developing services for the new smartphone platforms.”

“We chose to locate this global facility in Hong Kong because the Asian region has already launched services for several smartphone platforms including Google Android and BlackBerry from RIM.”

Mobile Streams recently announced the launch of two Google Android Game Storefronts for network operator partners in Asia and Australia.
