News Corp head Rupert Murdoch says his company will lead the way in charging for access to online news.

In a conversation about News Corp's financial situation, the media magnate said the global magazine, TV, and newspaper conglomerate would no longer give away its content for free.

Murdoch told the Financial Times , "We intend to charge for all our news websites."

He further predicted that "if we're successful, we'll be followed by all media."

News Corp's CEO Chase Carey told the newspaper that the policy would apply to online TV as well.

The change in policy comes as News Corp reported the financial results of a very bad year.

Revenue for the quarter that ended June 30 was down 11%.
