Science DiscussionsThe July 31, 2009 media brief by NASA called “NASA and CAFE Announce Green Aircraft Challenge” states that the prize for winning the competition is $1.5 million. To win the competition the green aircraft must average at least 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour) on a 320-kilometer (200-mile) flight while still achieving over 88 passenger kilometers per liter (200 passenger miles per gallon). NASA’s Innovative Partnerships Programs, along with the Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency (CAFE) Foundation, are teaming up to sponsor the contest. It will be held in July 2011 at the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, California. NASA and CAFE expect a variety of experimental aircraft for the contest, including those running on electricity, solar energy, bio-fuel, and a combination of fuels (hybrid). Already several universities and aircraft manufacturers have shown interest in entering the contest. NASA states, “To win, teams must use cutting-edge technologies in mechanical and electrical engineering, structures, aerodynamics and thermodynamics.” Page two continues. |
